Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first appearance was in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting after reaching the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry said that she was too nervous to be an actor at the age of 16, but she began doing shows in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to connect with people following her transfer to the university from Boston University. After graduating Perry moved to New York to search for jobs on television, landing small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent but homesickness brought Perry back home to California which is where she discovered theatre jobs. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie with her in the year 2015. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. Her father portrayed her in the ABC show Scandal. That same year she appeared as a younger model of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother as a young version. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite being a fan of this character.
